The Trump administration has defended television advertisements paid for by the US government that prominently promote the president and use language closely resembling his political campaign messaging.
More than $300,000 was reported to have been spent on one campaign-style advertisement. Democratic lawmakers and former government ethics officials have questioned whether taxpayer money is being improperly used for political promotion. Even Republican Senate leader John Thune said the message should not be financed with public funds.
